What is Canvas?

Canvas is the University of Illinois' official learning management system (LMS). This state-of-the-art, user-friendly platform provides students and instructors with one central location where they can easily access their course syllabus, assignments, announcements, grades and anything else that is pertinent to their course. (NOTE: Some NetMath courses may use a different LMS or multiple LMS's that are tailored to their specific needs.)

Accessing your Canvas Course

As a student, you'll need to know how to access your course announcements, assignments, and grades; submit assignments and quizzes; use Calendar, Chat, Conferences, and more.

Computers and Browsers

For best performance, Canvas should be used on the current or first previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Because it's built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.

Canvas only requires an operating system that can run the latest compatible web browsers. Your computer operating system should be kept up to date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades.

Mobile Apps

The Canvas Student app allows students to access their courses and groups using a mobile device. Students can submit assignments, participate in discussions, view grades, and access course materials. The app also provides access to course calendars, To Do items, notifications, and Inbox messages.

Canvas Student requires a Canvas account and is available for both Android and iOS devices. Before downloading the Canvas Student app, you may want to review the Canvas mobile device requirements.

Notes:

  • Not all Canvas features are supported on the Canvas Student app at this time. For more details, refer to the Canvas Student Mobile Features resource document.
  • Depending on your institution, you may need to log in to additional apps to view certain course content (e.g., Box).

If you do not want to use the Canvas Student app or are not on a mobile device, you can use a browser to access Canvas through your institution's URL.

Support and Troubleshooting

Students can get help with by using the Help menu within Canvas . The Help menu generates a list of resources to help you navigate Canvas. Canvas Help displays links according to your role(s) in the app. For instance, if you are a student, the Help menu will show you links available only pertaining to students.
